Conversions and Equivalents

Below are some approximate equivalents, conversions, temperature exchanges that could provide a helpful hand in understanding measures. Trying to figure out how to convert customary units to metric  and vice versa was a task I found too tedious when I lived in India. Much of this is part of an old cookbook that I still keep from the early days of my marriage, when  the kitchen was largely uncharted territory. I still use this to convert many recipes.

Volume Equivalents:
1 oz = 30 ml
1 tsp = 1/3 tbsp = 5 ml
 1 tbsp = 3 tsp =15 ml
4 tbsp = 1/4 cup = 60 ml
8 oz = 16 tbsp = 1 cup =240 ml
2 cups = 1 pint = 473 ml
2 pints = 4 cups = 1 quart = 946 ml
4 quarts = 1 gallon = 3.78 l

Weight and Common Ingredient Equivalents:
I pound (lb) =16 oz = 454 grams
1000 g = 1 kg
1 kg = 2.2 lbs
1 cup all purpose flour = 125 g
1 cup white sugar = 200 g
1 cup confectioner's sugar =125 g
1 stick butter = 4 ounces = 113 g
4 sticks butter = 1 lb = 454 grams

Temperature Conversions :
275° F =140 ° C = gas mark 1
300° F =150° C = gas mark 2
325° F =170° C = gas mark 3
350° F =180° C = gas mark 4
375° F =190° C = gas mark 5
400° F =200 ° C = gas mark 6
425° F = 220° C =gas mark 7
450° F = 230°C = gas mark 8
475° F = 240° C = gas mark 9

Do keep in mind that volume measurements are not exact. If you like being precise, a good kitchen scale comes in very handy .
Google aids in translating conversion exchanges. Simply type the amount and ingredient and what measure you need it yielded in, such as "1 lb in grams" and you will end up with a good approximate.
